Look at the glory around us: trees, birds. I lived in shame. I dishonored it all, and didn't notice the glory.
Mr. O'Brien (Brad Pitt's character) in The Tree of Life
words: Evan Wilson (adapted from Psalm 24)
music: Evan Wilson
The earth is the Lord’s
And everything in it
The earth and all who live in it
Come now and receive
Blessing from the Lord
And vindication from our God
Lift up your heads (lift up your heads)
You mighty gates (you mighty gates)
Be lifted up (be lifted up)
You ancient doors (you ancient doors)
That the king of glory may come in
Who may ascend
The mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one whose hands are clean
The one whose heart is pure
The one who does not in an idol trust
Lift up your heads (lift up your heads)
You mighty gates (you mighty gates)
Be lifted up (be lifted up)
You ancient doors (you ancient doors)
(2x)
That the king of glory may come in
The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
the Lord on high is mighty!
Your decrees are very trustworthy;
holiness befits your house,
O Lord, forevermore. (Psalm 93)
words: The Venerable Bede (735 CE), trans. Benjamin Webb
music: LASST UNS ERFREUEN
A hymn of glory let us sing
new songs throughout the world shall ring
alleluia! alleluia!
Christ, by a road before untrod,
ascends unto the throne of God
praise the Father, Son, and Spirit
alleluia! alleluia! alleluia!
Be now our joy on earth, O Lord
and be our future great reward
alleluia! alleluia!
then, throned with you forever, we
shall praise your name eternally
praise the Father, Son, and Spirit
alleluia! alleluia! alleluia!
O risen Christ, ascended Lord
all praise to you let earth accord
alleluia! alleluia!
you are, while endless ages run,
with Father and with Spirit one
praise the Father, Son, and Spirit
alleluia! alleluia! alleluia!
Almighty God,
You have shown your glory and your majesty:
In the beauty of your creation,
and yet, even this week, we have exploited and polluted your creation;
In the diversity of personalities and cultures,
and yet, even this week, we have despised your image in our neighbors;
In the gift of friends and family,
and yet, even this week, we have hardened our hearts toward them;
In your mercy as you draw near to us in your Word and in prayer,
and yet, even this week, we have neglected your way of grace and have exhausted ourselves and others trying to make our own way.
Forgive us. Save us from ourselves. And lead us in the way everlasting.
Take a moment now to acknowledge these things silently before the Lord, knowing forgiveness and rest are freely available in Jesus.
In Jesus, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. (Ephesians 1:7)
God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 8:9)
God’s grace abounds for us, even in our weakness.
Hear and know that you are forgiven, and be at peace. Thanks be to God.
All Souls Kids is taking a break this week and will be back next Sunday! In the meantime, feel free to play back one of our previous weeks' videos.
O Lord; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer (from Psalm 17)
Lord, we come before you on this weekend of remembering and honoring our brothers and sisters who have served, or are serving, our country in the military. We offer our gratitude for them and ask your protection over them. We pray, specifically: For those at war (silent prayer)
For those held captive, still missing, and those that have fallen; and the families living with loss and uncertainty (silent prayer)
For refugees and victims of war (silent prayer)
For departing soldiers, family and friends that remain at home, and for safe reunions (silent prayer)
For hope in the midst of destruction (silent prayer)
For healing from the trauma of war (silent prayer)
For the end of war, and the victory of your final peace and justice (silent prayer).
In your mercy, Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.
words: Evan Wilson (2020) adapted from the African American spiritual “Down By the Riverside”
I’m gonna lay down my sword and shield
Down by the riverside
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I’m gonna lay down my sword and shield
And I ain’t gonna study war
I ain’t gonna study war
I ain’t gonna study war no more
I’m gonna follow the prince of peace
Down by the riverside
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside
There is love for my enemies
And I ain’t gonna study war
I ain’t gonna study war
I ain’t gonna study war no more
Brother, lay all your violence down
O sisters who pray for peace
Come to the riverside
Come, let us walk in the light of God
Nations will not take up the sword
Nor will they train for war
Come, let us walk in the light of God
All we have is given to us by God. Our offerings express this joyful dependence as well as our commitment to join God in his work of renewal. He who met our most dire need through Christ will continue to provide for every need we have— so, whether we have much or little, God calls us to treasure and trust Him above all.
All gifts go toward ministry initiatives of All Souls and relief of those in need.
May the Lord your God supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19) Amen.
Let us go forth and serve our world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God!
