"Psalm 24 (The Earth is the Lord’s)"

words: Evan Wilson (based on Psalm 24)

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it
The earth and all who live in it
Come now and receive blessing from the Lord
And vindication from our God

Lift up your heads (lift up your heads)
You mighty gates (you mighty gates)
Be lifted up (be lifted up)
You ancient doors (you ancient doors)
That the king of glory may come in

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one whose hands are clean
The one whose heart is pure
The one who does not in an idol trust

Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done.

Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.

Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek his face always. (Psalm 105:1-4)

Almighty God to you all hearts are open
Search and know our thoughts and anxious fears
Wash us in the fountain of your mercy
Come with your light, we cannot hide from you

Almighty God to you all hearts are open
With gratitude we raise our song to you
Come and fill the praises of your people
In grace and truth, you make us new again

chorus:

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Almighty God to you all hearts are open
We long for more than what this world provides
No shallow spring will ever satisfy us
Your river deep floods over everything

chorus

Romans 8:26-39 (niv)

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;

we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Lord, we confess that in our weakness, instead of seeking you we have sought our own way. We have relied on our own devices and we have turned against you in thought, word, and deed; in the things we have done but also in the things we have not done that would have been loving to our families and neighbors and ultimately to you. The Psalmist leads us in praying:

Turn to me and have mercy on me,
as you always do to those who love your name.

Direct my footsteps according to your word;
let no sin rule over me (Psalm 119:132-133)

Take a moment now to acknowledge these things silently before the Lord, knowing forgiveness and rest are freely available in Jesus.

Receive now the good news— our greatest need, that we could never accomplish on our own, has been met in Jesus Christ:

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all— how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:31-32, 38-29)

Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

Thanks be to God.

During the reflection time, children are invited to engage in a special time of reading and song so they can learn and discover the gospel in a language and style more suitable to them. Click here for the video.

Matthew 9:1-8 (niv)

Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

You hear us calling You hear us calling, Abba Father (2x)
Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy
Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy

For the church of Christ, around the globe that we would learn what it means to be one, as you, Lord, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit are One. For the church of Christ, in Seattle that we would grow in our unity with one another seeking to understand more than to be understood. For your church scattered during this time across the neighborhoods and industries of our great city, that our lives of love and service would bear witness to an alternative story and way.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For all of us who continue to live in the tension of power and race in America,
that we would, in humility, discover our cultural biases
and seek understanding from those who are different than us.
Guide us to become advocates for justice and equality.
For our local, state, and national leadership,
that they would be granted grace to lead with civility, justice, and peace,
and that you would protect their families as they face the challenges attending these offices.

Lord, hear our prayer.

You hear us calling
You hear us calling, Abba Father

For the victims of tyranny, genocide, captivity, and abuse,
for those who flee for safety we pray for your mercy;
for your comfort we pray that violent acts would be defied, and brought to an end.
For all who are vulnerable, we pray for just protection and merciful care
to short-circuit the violent cycles of poverty and oppression.
For those who face social turmoil over issues of free speech and religious conviction
we pray for your way of peace to take root in hearts and lives.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who live on our streets we pray for relief, and for comfort, for protection against the coronavirus. May we, your people, humanize our engagement with our brothers and sisters and know the grace of serving you, as we are moved to serve them. (Read by: Steve and Mary Ann Simmons)

"Death In His Grave"

words: John Mark McMillan

download sheet music

Though the earth cried out for blood, satisfied her hunger was
Billows calmed on raging seas, for the souls of men she craved
Sun and moon from balcony, turned their head in disbelief
Their precious love would taste the sting, disfigured and disdained

chorus:

On Friday a thief, on Sunday a king
Laid down in grief but woke with the keys
To hell on that day, first born of the slain
The man Jesus Christ laid Death in his grave

So three days in darkness slept the morning sun of righteousness
But rose to shame the throes of death and overturn his rule
Now daughters and the sons of men would pay not their dues again
The debt of blood they owed was rent when the day rolled anew

chorus

He has cheated hell and seated us above the fall
In desperate places he paid our wages
One time, once and for all

chorus

Freely you have received; freely give.
(Matthew 10:8)

All we have is given to us by God. Our offerings express this joyful dependence as well as our commitment to join God in his work of renewal. He who met our most dire need through Christ will continue to provide for every need we have— so, whether we have much or little, God calls us to treasure and trust Him above all.

All gifts go toward ministry initiatives of All Souls and relief of those in need.

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. (Jude 24-25)

Let us go forth and serve our world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God!
