Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

22 August, 2021

Welcome to All Souls at Home

As I have read the Gospels over the years, the belief has grown in me that Christ did not come to found an organized religion but came instead to found an unorganized one. He seems to have come to carry religion out of the temples into the fields and sheep pastures, onto the roadsides and the banks of the rivers, into the houses of sinners and publicans, into the town and the wilderness, toward the membership of all that is here. Well, you can read and see what you think.

Wendell Berry, Jayber Crow

"Psalm 100"

words: Evan Wilson (based on Psalm 100)

music: Evan Wilson (2019)

download sheet music

Shout for joy unto the Lord all the earth
Come before him with your songs, songs of joy
Enter in his gates with thanks, praise his name

chorus:
For the Lord is good
And his love endures forevermore
The Lord is good
And his love endures

Know the Lord is God, indeed, and we are his
By the shepherd’s holy hand are we all made
In the pasture of the Lord we are safe

chorus

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. (Psalm 133)

"The Solid Rock"

words: Edward More and William B. Bradbury

music: Edward More and William B. Bradbury; arr. by Page CXVI

download sheet music

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name

When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the vale

chorus:
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay

chorus

When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh, may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

chorus

Philippians 3:1-13 (niv)

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

In the freedom the gospel provides, we are invited to come to God honestly and appeal to God not on the basis of our own goodness, but on the basis of His goodness.

The psalmist leads us into prayer:

Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good.
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.
All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. (Psalm 25:7-11)

Take a moment now to acknowledge these things silently before the Lord, knowing forgiveness and rest are freely available in Jesus.

We serve a God of limitless power and might. Yet, in all of his power he looks on us with mercy, and draws us into his family, because of what Jesus Christ has done.

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Together, we remember the hope of the gospel:
In Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

This summer, All Souls would have sent a team of staff, youth, and parents to the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon, to serve the Native community there with Sacred Road Ministries. Sadly, due to the Covid pandemic, this summer as with last summer, all teams had to be cancelled at Warm Springs, as well as the Yakima Reservation in Washington. So while we couldn't be there in person this summer, we can be with them prayerfully. Please join us today in prayer for our Native neighbors in the Northwest.

Father, we pray for our Native American brothers and sisters who are part of the Yakima and Warm Springs tribes, as well as the 60 other tribes across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. We pray that your love, grace, and mercy would be apparent and tangible everyday to your children, who belong to every tongue, tribe, and nation.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Father, we pray for the children at the Warm Springs Community Center’s Kids Club, who ordinarily during the summer have opportunity to hear about Jesus from visiting church teams. We ask, Holy Spirit, that the unique hope of the gospel will make its way into and fill their hearts, and that somehow every child would encounter the overwhelming love of Jesus. Father, comfort their tender hearts and let them know how incredibly loved and valued they are.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Father, we pray for the folks who work and volunteer with Sacred Road Ministries. Please protect and equip Chris, Mary, Tomo, Tom, Evan, Holly, Veronica and others by keeping them well, and by providing the energy and sustenance needed to continue this incredible work without the hands needed to carry it out. Lord, be their hands and make their burden light.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Father, we pray for the communities of Warm Springs and Yakima-- the elders, parents, young adults, and teens. We pray for reconciliation, through Jesus, of the tragic and sustained injustices that have been committed against them and so many of the generations before. We pray that the consequences of generational trauma would be healed, that Covid would stay far away from these vulnerable communities, and for excellent mental and physical health resources for those who are suffering. May they be healed in your name, Jesus.

Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.

"Raise Up A Holy Sound"

words: Evan Wilson (stanzas 1 & 2) and James Weldon Johnson (stanza 3 [public domain]; alt. Wilson)

music: Evan Wilson (c) 2020

download sheet music

Raise up a holy sound til every wall come down
Til every nation lives in harmony
Let songs of freedom roll, rivers of justice flow
Let peace fall as a dove upon the sea

Come, let us go up the mount of the Lord together
Where a brother never takes sword against a brother
Lay every weapon down
Let heaven’s peace resound
Til lamb and lion are together found

When will our prayer be sealed? When will our hearts be healed?
Lord, do you see how many sparrows fall?
Save from our dark despair; daily our burdens bear
Into the morning, lead us with a song

Father to the fatherless, guardian of the widow
All the poor the Lord will bless and oppressors bring low
He leads the prisoner out
From bitter dark and doubt
All are set free in thine eternal fount

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way
Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light
Keep us forever in the path, we pray

Lest our feet stray from the place, our God, where we met Thee
Lest, our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, forget Thee
Shadowed beneath Thy hand
May we forever stand
True to our God, true to our native land

Let us march on (til victory is won)
Let us march on (til victory is won)

Til victory is won, til victory is won

Psalm 107:1-22 (niv)

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
3 those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
4 Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding no way to a city where they could settle.
5 They were hungry and thirsty,
and their lives ebbed away.
6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
to a city where they could settle.
8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
10 Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness,
prisoners suffering in iron chains,
11 because they rebelled against God’s commands
and despised the plans of the Most High.
12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;
they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,
and broke away their chains.
15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
16 for he breaks down gates of bronze
and cuts through bars of iron.
17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways
and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
18 They loathed all food
and drew near the gates of death.
19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
20 He sent out his word and healed them;
he rescued them from the grave.
21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings
and tell of his works with songs of joy.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Hi friends! I am delighted to announce that Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, perhaps familiar to those of you who attended the Parish Dinner, is the new location for our gathered worship on Sundays. You can find out more about the community on their website as Madison Middle School continues to be closed to us and we seek to gather together in person again.

In 1947, a graduate-school student at the University of Washington named Thelma Dewitty was finishing her mathematics book for children and applying to teach with Seattle Public Schools. She and her husband were not the only ones hoping she would get the job. The Seattle Urban League, NAACP, the Civic Unity Committee, and Christian Friends for Racial Equality all encouraged the school system to break ‘the color barrier' by hiring her. The Frank B. Cooper School, where we will be in a couple weeks, hired Thelma Dewitty and she became the first African American teacher to teach in Seattle Public Schools.

Today, as Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, the Cooper School building continues to be a place where ongoing color barriers— and other barriers that harm our community— are creatively engaged.

This building is a gallery space, a dance studio, a home to artists-in-residence, a recording studio for young musicians, a hub for educational and volunteer opportunities in Seattle’s greenspaces and waterways. Now, Youngstown is also home to All Souls on Sunday mornings.

You can learn more at the bottom of this webpage about the ways you can help us host in our new space.

Freely you have received; freely give.
(Matthew 10:8)

All we have is given to us by God. Our offerings express this joyful dependence as well as our commitment to join God in his work of renewal. He who met our most dire need through Christ will continue to provide for every need we have— so, whether we have much or little, God calls us to treasure and trust Him above all.

All gifts go toward ministry initiatives of All Souls and relief of those in need.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Let us go forth and serve our world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God!
